Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin is an accomplished Irish scientist and educator who has made significant contributions to the fields of science and science communication. A student of theoretical and mathematical physics, she gained a PhD in mathematics education at Trinity College Dublin, before jumping from assistant professor to her current post as associate professor in the school of mathematics and statistics at UCD. She has become a role model for those interested in science and mathematics, breaking down complex concepts while making important contributions to her academic field.
2023 has seen her influence the future of our ecology; following her nomination last year by the then Taoiseach Micheál Martin, she has chaired the world’s first Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss which culminated in April with a presentation of recommendations to the Oireachtas. She was nominated as Ireland’s representative at the United Nations General Assembly for International Mother Earth Day, where she presented findings from the Citizens’ Assembly report. An active voice this year at the intersection of science and environmentalism makes Ní Shúilleabháin our Public Life winner of 2023.
