Laura McGann is an Irish director known for her dedication to storytelling and her ability to capture compelling narratives, and it was her 2023 documentary The Deepest Breath that gripped audiences across the globe.
The culmination of years of work, it told the true story of Italian freediver Alessia Zecchini on her quest to break a world record with the help of safety diver Irishman Stephen Keenan. In its first week of release, it hit 4.6 million views on Netflix, followed by 3.5 million in the following seven days. It has already surpassed 10 million streams, made heroes of its protagonists and shown an extraordinary level of cinematography, vision and tenderness by the filmmaker. It is simply one of the best Irish films of this year, and for that reason, Laura McGann is our Woman of 2023 in Film and Drama.
